The Power in the Name of Jesus

Good morning brethren, I would like to share a brief exhortation with us on the topic: “The Power in the Name of Jesus.” Our anchor Scripture is Philippians 2:9–11 “Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” My aim today is to encourage every believer to understand that whatever the name of your challenge may be, the name of Jesus is above it! To begin with, we must understand that there is power in a name. A name can represent authority, identity, influence and reputation. That is why, when someone speaks in the name of a person who carries authority, that name can command attention and action. However, there is a name that is above every other name. A name that carries unlimited authority, power and dominion. That name is JESUS! For a better understanding, I would like to highlight some important dimensions of the power in the name of Jesus. Jesus’s name carries supreme authority, Philippians 2:9–10 tells us that God has highly exalted Jesus and given Him a name above every other name. This means that no power, authority, kingdom or spiritual force can stand above the authority of Jesus Christ. Jesus Himself declared in Matthew 28:18 “All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.” This means Jesus has authority over Hence Jesus has authority over the powers of darkness - principalities and spiritual wickedness, sicknesses and diseases, sin and death. In fact Jesus has power over every situation that appears impossible to man.

A good biblical example is the encounter between Jesus and the man possessed by a legion of demons in Mark 5:1–13. This man had become uncontrollable. Nobody could restrain him, not even with chains. He lived among the tombs and was tormented by evil spirits. But when Jesus arrived, the demons immediately recognised His authority. They could not resist His presence. The lesson here is this, no matter how difficult or overwhelming your situation may appear, never place your confidence in human ability alone. Put your confidence in the supreme authority of Jesus Christ. What man cannot handle, Jesus has the power to handle! The name of Jesus is not just a name for miracles; it is the name through which humanity receives salvation. Jesus did not come merely to improve our circumstances; He came to save us from sin and reconcile us to God. Acts 4:12 says “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” Also, in John 14:6, Jesus declared “I Am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by Me. Brethren, this reminds us that our greatest need is not just financial breakthrough, healing or deliverance. Our greatest need is salvation through Jesus Christ. The name of Jesus gives us access to forgiveness, reconciliation with God and the gift of eternal life. The name of Jesus has power to heal and restores. One powerful biblical example is the story of Peter and John in Acts 3:1–8, 16. They encountered a man who had been lame from birth, sitting at the Beautiful Gate of the temple. Every day, he was carried there to beg for money. The man was expecting financial assistance, but God had something far greater in store for him. Peter said to him “In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk.” (Acts 3:6). Immediately, his feet and ankle bones received strength. He stood up, walked, entered the temple, leaping and praising God. Acts 3:16 confirms that it was faith in the name of Jesus that made this man completely whole. The lesson is that the name of Jesus still carries healing and restoring power today. Jesus can restore what has been broken, strengthen what has become weak and bring hope where there has been despair. The name of Jesus brings deliverance from the power of darkness, In Luke 10:17–19, when the seventy disciples returned from their assignment, they rejoiced because even the demons were subject to them through the name of Jesus. Jesus responded by reminding them of the authority He had given them. This teaches us that the name of Jesus carries authority over the kingdom of darkness. Furthermore, Colossians 2:15 tells us that Jesus disarmed principalities and powers, making a public spectacle of them and triumphing over them through the cross. Therefore, as believers, we must not live in fear of the powers of darkness. We must stand firmly in Christ, resist the devil and remain rooted in the Word of God. James 4:7 says “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”

Our confidence is not in our human strength but in Christ, who has already triumphed over the enemy. Another important point is the fact that the name of Jesus gives us access to the Father, this is one great privilege of being a Christian  that we can approach God through Jesus Christ. John 14:13–14 says “And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.” The name of Jesus is our confidence and access to the Father. It gives us the privilege of approaching God in prayer and making our requests known to Him according to His will. Hebrews 4:16 encourages us “Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.” Brethren, what a privilege we have! We do not need to approach God with fear or uncertainty. Through Jesus Christ, we can come boldly before the throne of grace. This is why we must never underestimate the power of prayer in the name of Jesus. Another important dimensions of the power in the name of Jesus is that the name is above every other name. Let us return to our anchor Scripture, Philippians 2:10–11, It declares that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, things on earth and things under the earth. This is a declaration of the universal Lordship and supremacy of Jesus Christ. Whatever name your challenge carries, remember that the name of Jesus is above it! Whether it is sickness, barrenness, failure, disappointment, fear, depression, confusion, oppression or financial difficulties, none of these is greater than the authority of Jesus Christ. I want us to take away this important lesson: Never magnify your problems above your God! In other words, do not allow the size of your Goliath to determine the size of your faith. Remember David and Goliath in 1 Samuel 17. While others saw Goliath as an unbeatable giant, David saw him as someone who had challenged the army of the living God. David’s confidence was not in his physical strength but in the name of the Lord. In 1 Samuel 17:45, David declared “Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts.” Brethren, whatever you are confronting today, place your confidence in the Lord. The name of Jesus is greater than every challenge you may face. Having understood the power in the name of Jesus, how are we expected to exercise this authority as believers? First, we must understand that the power is not in merely pronouncing the name of Jesus as a religious formula. It comes through a genuine relationship with Christ, faith in Him and obedience to His Word. As believers, we must live in relationship with Jesus and walk in obedience to His Word. However there are few practical steps, we can exercise the power in the name of Jesus through faith in Jesus Christ (Acts 3:16), through prayer (John 14:13–14), through a life of holiness and obedience (John 15:7) and through the power of the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:8). We cannot successfully live the Christian life through human strength alone. We need the help and empowerment of the Holy Spirit. In conclusion, please understand that there is power in the name of Jesus, Jesus’s name healed the lame man, delivered the oppressed and gave the early Church boldness, Jesus’s name is still powerful today. Jesus’s name has and will not lost its authority.

Therefore as believers let us call upon Jesus name with faith and expectation.  When sickness comes, call upon Jesus, when trouble comes, call upon Jesus, when fear comes, call upon Jesus, when the enemy threatens, stand in the authority of Jesus, when situations appear impossible, remember that Jesus Christ is Lord! My prayer is that every power of darkness opposing your destiny will be defeated in the name of Jesus. May every impossible situation receive divine intervention, and may you experience healing, restoration and victory in Jesus’ mighty name. Amen!
